Does this excerpt from the Hadith describe an ethical religion? With this assignment, you will be examining the origins of Islam in the seventh century, the third of the major Western monotheistic religions, and you are being asked the same question as with the cases of early Judaism and Christianity, i.e., whether the religion was an ethical religion. In this case you are not looking at an excerpt from the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam, but are examining excerpts from the Hadith, the traditions associated with the life and teaching of Muhammad which give explanation to the religion. This is actually a quite complex assignment because you need to read the text of the document very closely to try and reach a conclusion of whether this is describing, or not describing, an ethical religion. Consider the fact that there is a passage in the Hadith that involves the angel--I'm not going to say anything more than that--which is extremely important for your answer. You do not have to compare this document with the earlier documents, but you do need to include quoted evidence in your essay.
