Does the "Sermon" describe an ethical religion? Earlier in the course you read the
excerpt from Genesis to examine the origins of Judaism.  With this assignment, you will
be examining the Sermon on the Mount, a text from the Gospels, in an attempt to
understand the origins of early Christianity.  In both cases, you are being asked the
same essential question of whether the document in question described the basis of an
ethical religion.  That is an important point because both Christianity and Judaism, as
well as later Islam, the three major religions of the Western world, were all
ethically-based religions.  And so you want to examine the textual documents that date
from the origins of these religions to see whether each religion really did require ethical
behavior.  Please remember that when you compose your paragraph for this
assignment, you need to include direct, quoted evidence from the document.
