Bastet was a popular Egyptian goddess connected with the home, women, family, sexuality and cats. She protected the home from evil spirits and disease and was viewed as the defender of the pharaoh, and consequently of the sun god, Ra. "Bastet was originally a fierce lioness warrior goddess of the sun worshiped throughout most of ancient Egyptian history, but later she became Bastet, the cat goddess that is familiar today. (Wikipedia) She is often portrayed as woman with the head of a cat holding a sistrum (rattle) in her right hand, a small bag in the left hand and with kittens at her feet.
