Dickens Paper Assignment

 

 

 

A lot of people have read Hard Times since it first appeared way back in 1854.  Doesn't that make you feel like a living part of history to also have that opportunity to read the book?  Dickens wrote a lot during his lifetime (over seventeen novels plus short stories and sketches), and most of his novels appeared in serialized form first, usually in weekly or monthly installments, and then only later appearing in book form.  This is a photo of the London first edition of 1854 (source: www.dndgalleries.com/graphics/2132a.jpg.

Read Charles Dickens (1812-1870), Hard Times (in its entirety).

Answer the following question in a one-page paper:

Citing specific evidence from Dickens' Hard Times (not from the textbook), describe some of the effects of industrialization and urbanization on English society in the nineteenth century.

Before proceeding, you might wish to read the short notes and review the study questions on Dickens. 

Your paper must follow this format:

  • must have brief introduction and conclusion paragraphs (each not to exceed three lines); the introduction must directly respond to the assignment question and identify your analysis/thesis points.
  • font size 10 or 12 only
  • one-inch margins
  • double-spaced
  • page number citations for your quoted evidence
  • name, and only your name, at the top left of the paper
  • not to exceed one (1) page
  • You may consider submitting a draft of your assignment to your instructor for feedback before submitting the assignment for the grade. At times, you may be asked to rewrite your essay.  This is done for your own benefit and will result in an improved grade.
