These football neck pads were quite common in the 1970s and 1980s. The pads came in different shapes, sizes and colors and were intended to help stabilize the neck from an extreme whiplash injury. The pads were also often called simply neck rolls or cowboy collars. It was never clear whether they actually did anything, but they did look "tough."
