Japan Paragraph Assignment
Well,
when most people think of Japanese history, they think of the samurai,
and those warriors were around for a long time as part of Japanese
society. Pictured here are some samurai sword (katana) examples from the
Tokyo Sword Museum. Making the sword was a very involved and expensive process, beginning with the
jewel-quality steel which took days to make in a special hearth. The
sword is actually a blend of two kinds of carbon steel which required
days of work by a swordsmith to hammer it into shape, removing
impurities in the process. Then the blade had to be curved,
polished and decorated. You can still buy them. Photo

Read the decrees on the Seclusion of Japan (along with the document background information, the study questions and the short video) and answer the following
question in a paragraph:
Citing specific evidence from the decrees on the Seclusion of Japan (not from the textbook), explain some of the key points and rationale behind the exclusionary decrees?
Your paragraph must follow this format:
- begin with a concise topic sentence (sentence 1) that directly responds to the assigned
question (no need to define terms or cite a dictionary) and that identifies your analysis/thesis points.
- font size 10 or 12 only
- one-inch margins
- double-spaced
- direct, quoted material to support your points
- name, and only your name, at the top left of the paper
- about one-half page in length (not to exceed 3/4 page)
- You

feedback before submitting the assignment for the grade. At times, you may be asked
to rewrite your work. This is done for your own benefit
and will result in an improved grade.
