[Note: I believe that the bowling alley closed circa 1952. This building no longer exists as the site is now part of the American Legion Post 16 parking lot. The building stood at roughly the site of the current flagpole. As I remember from the 1960s, the building housed some-kind of sewing mill. There was also a short alley on the east side of the building, Middle Alley, which technically still exists as part of the American Legion parking lot. The American Legion's address is 510 Main St.]

Caro-Nell Park Changes Hands, now called Sunland Park

Caro-Nell Park for many years the haven for picnics and swimming for this vicinity has been sold by the Evans-Yale Realty Corp., to Maranatha Settlement Ass. Inc., Philadelphia.

This religious organization is run by a group of ministers and Christian businessmen from Philadelphia and has as its board of directors well known ministers from all over the country. Its aim is to give under-privileged children from the congested areas of the city an opportunity to enjoy the wholesome facilities afforded by this Park.

Sunland Park, as it has been renamed because one of its sponsors is the Sun Oil Co., will be open seven days a week, until dark. However, there will be no Sunday swimming and women bathers are allowed to wear only one-piece bathing suits. Picnicers are welcome to use the grounds at anytime, but all picnics must register at the stand before entering.

The Maranatha Settlement Ass. had formerly planned to keep Sunland Park for their private use. But when they learned that it was the only available swimming place for the surrounding town they changed their plans and invite the public to use the park.

The organization expects to develop the property extensively and already have placed 50 ton of white Cape May sand on the beach. J. A. B. Cellini is the Superintendent of the Maranatha Settlement Ass., Inc. and has charge of Sunland Park.

Sunland pool

Postcard view of the Sunland pool circa 1950s

[Note: Caro-Nell Park opened in the summer of 1927 on the property of the old Turnbach farm. Bungalows were built by Evans and Yale Realty Company. The pool was open to the general public for swimming. The pool/pond does not appear to be there any longer from what I've seen on Google Earth. There used to be a sign at the entrance to Sunland Park, but that is no longer there. The Valley Green Inn aka the Green Valley Inn stood at the entrance to the park. Some stone pillars still sit at the entrance to the former park. The road into and through the park is now named Hillside Rd. I am not exactly sure when the pool/pond went out of use. When Richard Morris, the real estate developer, bought the area circa 1972, the pool still existed.]
